Kathmandu, March 31, 2025 – Nepal is witnessing a surge in pro-monarchy sentiments following a series of events that have intensified political unrest across the country.
The movement began on February 19, 2025, when former King Gyanendra Shah delivered a speech on Democracy Day, urging Nepalese citizens to unite for the nation’s protection and unity. His remarks sparked renewed discussions about the monarchy’s role in Nepal’s future.
On March 9, 2025, thousands of pro-monarchy supporters gathered in Kathmandu, welcoming the former king near Tribhuvan International Airport with slogans like “Come king, save the nation!” The large-scale rally demonstrated growing dissatisfaction with the current political system.
Tensions escalated on March 28, 2025, when violent clashes erupted during another pro-monarchy demonstration. Protesters vandalized buildings, set fires, and confronted police forces, resulting in injuries on both sides. In response, authorities imposed a curfew in the affected areas.
By March 30, 2025, major political parties, including the Nepali Congress and Maoist Centre, condemned the violence and accused former King Gyanendra of inciting unrest. The government initiated discussions to address the crisis and proposed legal actions against those involved in violent activities.
Despite the crackdown, fresh demonstrations continued on March 31, 2025, with pro-monarchy groups demanding the reinstatement of the monarchy and Nepal’s recognition as a Hindu state. The movement has gained momentum due to widespread frustration over political instability and corruption, further deepening the country’s ongoing turmoil.
