Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has departed for New York, leading a Nepali delegation to participate in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Oli is scheduled to address the UNGA on September 26.
The theme of this year’s General Debate is “Leaving No One Behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations.”
During his visit, Prime Minister Oli will attend the opening session of the General Debate on September 24 and a reception hosted by U.S. President Joseph Biden on September 25, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
As the Chair of the Global Coordination Bureau of Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Oli will address the Summit of the Future. He will also speak at high-level meetings on existential threats posed by sea-level rise and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), among other topics.
On September 23, Oli will deliver a keynote speech at Columbia University on “Nepal’s Journey to Democracy and Economic Prosperity.” He will also speak at the John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum at Harvard University on “Nepal’s Perspective: From Transitional Justice to Climate Justice” on September 27.
The Prime Minister is also scheduled to meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and engage in bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the UNGA.
Prime Minister Oli is accompanied by his spouse Radhika Shakya, Minister for Foreign Affairs Arzu Rana Deuba, Foreign Secretary Sewa Lamsal, and other senior officials. He is expected to return to Kathmandu on September 30.
