Kathmandu / In the largest mass deportation of Nepali nationals to date, the U.S. government has repatriated 37 Nepalis who were found to be living illegally in America, according to officials from Nepal’s Immigration Department.
The deportees arrived in Kathmandu on a chartered flight from the United States on Sunday evening, June 8, 2025. Anjan Neupane, spokesperson for the Immigration Office at Tribhuvan International Airport, confirmed the group was immediately processed upon arrival.
“This is the biggest single-day deportation of Nepali citizens by the U.S. government,” Neupane stated.
The deported individuals were reportedly in violation of U.S. immigration laws. With this latest group, a total of 177 Nepalis have been deported from the U.S. since President Donald Trump’s return to office in January 2025.
Authorities say many Nepalis attempt to enter the U.S. through dangerous, illegal migration routes, often paying millions of rupees to human traffickers and brokers. These treacherous journeys typically involve transit through multiple countries in Latin America before reaching the U.S. border.
The Trump administration is now preparing to revoke Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for thousands of Nepalis who had been allowed to remain in the U.S. following the 2015 earthquake in Nepal, raising fears of further mass deportations.
Meanwhile, Nepali immigration and police officials are intensifying investigations into the role of trafficking networks and illegal migration agents who may have facilitated these journeys.
