London / Gender rights activist Bandana Rana has been re-elected to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). She secured her position with 146 votes in the election held in New York on Friday. Rana’s new term will run from 2025 to 2028.
Following her re-election, Lok Bahadur Thapa, Head of the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations, thanked the member states for their support.
The 23-member CEDAW committee, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, is instrumental in monitoring women’s status worldwide. It ensures the implementation of the commitments made by countries under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).
